A professional polygraph exam is not meant to feel like a dramatic interrogation. The appointment should begin with a calm explanation of the issue, the exam format, and the questions that may be used. That structure helps clients understand what is happening and why.
1. Private intake
The first step is a confidential intake conversation. The examiner reviews the reason for the appointment, who is requesting the exam, what documentation may be needed, and whether the issue can be converted into clear, testable questions.
2. Pre-test interview
Before the instrumented portion begins, the examiner explains the process and reviews the question language. This is where vague concerns are narrowed into direct questions that the examinee understands before testing.
3. Examination
During the examination, sensors record physiological activity while the examiner asks the prepared questions. The room should be controlled, private, and free from unnecessary distractions.
4. Result review
After the exam, results are reviewed according to the agreed communication path. In many cases, a written summary is prepared for an authorized person such as the client, attorney, employer, or approved recipient.
- Bring valid identification if requested.
- Arrive rested and allow enough time for the appointment.
- Ask questions during the pre-test review if anything is unclear.
- Confirm who is allowed to receive results before the appointment.
